I know that resources like duotrope are great for finding catalogues of literary journals, but how do you find out what are the biggest-name journals - the ones that would stand out the most in a list of your publishing credits? I know the really-huge-named ones, the ones that they sell in my bookstore. But duotrope lists hundreds of other journals - how do you compare the rest?

On a side note... I'm writing some stuff that is sort of in the border ground between genres... fairly literary, but with the flavour of horror or speculative fiction. But a lot of it is just "psychological horror" - people facing real, but dark/twisted situations. Seems like it's too twisted for a lot of mainstream lit journals but too naturalistic for the horror and sci-fi ones. Can anyone suggest how I can target my search?

In general, the pro-paying markets tend to make more impressive credits, so I'd start there. Also, duotrope lets you see or search by awards and award nominations for each publication, so you might keep that in mind too. And if you haven't checked it out already, this page (bottom left) gives you a list of the top 25 most challenging markets with a reported sale. (lowest acceptance rate). Hope this helps!

Eta: Oh, and this page too, for even more of a challenge.

Horror magazines usually take real horror, not just supernatural horror. You could also try the 'open to most' category.

For narrowing it down, the bibliographies of other writers can be useful. It's brought up a number of places I wouldn't have thought to look at otherwise.

I had a similar experiance, and I typed 'psychological' in the keyword/phrase box. I also typed 'thriller' and other stuff that I felt was appliable to my work. It helped some.

When trying to figure out which markets are the most well-known, I rely on good old google. I pick a handful of the markets I like best (based on pay, submissions process, what I've seen of their site, and what I think of the sample stories I read) and then google search them. The one with the most hits (after a quick browse that no scandal is recorded on the first page) wins.
