I have decided to up my stop start efforts to get into freelance writing. At the moment I am really just freewheeling along earning small amounts of money for a couple of regular clients. this is fine as it is just a part time venture... but my full time work is not paying as well as it used to so I am looking at increasing my revenue stream in the Freelancing world.

To that end I am planning on giving cold calling a try over the next couple of days. The plan is to create a 'hitlist' of businesses within a certain vertical (one that I am extremely knowledgeable in anyway) and use my cold calling and B2B sales experience to pitch them my writing in various forms, from web content to newsletters, sales letters to reports, etc, etc.

Now whilst cold calling doesn't fill me with dread in the same way it probably does to many people I am hunting hints and tips from any that have gone through this process.

My initial thoughts are

1) To sell the benefit of the writing to the business
2) To target just a couple of 'styles' of writing, e.g. web content and newsletter
3) To get, at the very least, email addresses of people to be included in my own (yet to be created) newsletter on business writing - obviously with correct opt-ins in place.

So right now I am only on the basics of a plan... anyone done this before? Any specifics or even general tips?
