I know in many First Nations culutures it is considered rude for a child to look into an adult's eyes. I'm wondering if this is true of the Métis in Alberta. Also if this is true, would most parents be on the side of having their child affirm to this expectation of the culture in situations such as school (non-aborigional school) or would the parents wish for their child to assimulate.
The reason why this is especially relevant is my MC has difficulties with some of the social rules and I'm curious whether the parents would be trying to enforce or discourage eye contact with authority figures.
I have done a lot of research into the
Métis culture for this story but couldn't find anything specficially on eye contact.
This situation is also complicated by the fact that although my MC's mother is First Nations, her father is a Hungarian immigrant. Interracial marriage may lead to some blending of cultures.
