Every time I go back and read a previously written chapter, I find some small spelling errors (your, you're, to, two, too) that I know were not there before I had saved it. I'm starting to suspect auto-correct is correcting things for me that do not need correction.

I turned off parts of it, so, for instance, two hyphens are not auto-corrected into an em-dash, but I still like having my typos auto-corrected, so that part of it I left turned on.

Then I added all my major character names so instead of typing out the whole name I just type the first letter and auto-correct fills in the rest. Pretty handy.

I have all these annoying options switched off. When I'm good and ready, I'll tell Word to spellcheck.

Tip to all who read this thread, goto Tech Help forum, select Search this Forum, enter autocorrect and spend a moment or ten reading the older threads.

I turn everything off. Just type.

You're writing a manuscript, not doing desktop publishing. Turn off all the typesetting stuff. If you want to turn on some autocorrection because you tend to misspell things (such as "teh" instead of "the"), I think that's okay but then you're kind of enabling yourself to be a lazy typist.

I keep spell check, auto hyphen, and widow/orphan protection on, but switch off the rest of grammar check. MS Word was not made for creative writing so it's not helpful for me. Spell check is especially good for a new project and keeping the correct spelling of names straight, but the rest of it has me screaming at my computer because I know I'm right.

I haven't Word, but MS Works. It has a similar autocorrect function and when I first found this out, I hated it and immediately turned it off. I know how to spell, thank you! And when I don't, THAT'S what spellcheck or a dictionary is for. Proofreading is for the typos. I really don't want some computer program trying to do my proofing (and probably doing it wrong) for me.

For the record, I mostly just type in Wordpad, which doesn't have any such functions. Sometimes wish it had spellcheck, but I can deal. Like I said, that's what dictionaries are for. Often when looking up a word in the dictionary I'll find that the meaning isn't quite what I intended anyway, and spellcheck can't tell you that.

Please note these are just MY opinions on why *I* don't use the thing. If others want to use it, that's fine by me. I'm not judging them as people.
