Introducing a character who changes their name?

I have a cross-dresser in one of my classes at uni. He's a guy that likes to be known as "her" so I would think a transsexual would be the same.

I'd talk about how he's started dressing different and asking to be called kate instead of john and such. No notes... just work it into the description of our new john

It's kind of a tricky point, since it's intended to be the same actor -- the same person on screen, and the same individual -- the same human being, in the script.

Probably a note will do it, so long as the transition, in terms of what's happening in the script itself makes the transition clear.

Not clear what your plot device here is... but here are some suggestions.

If John is John in the beginning, then we realize (Through dialogue) that he is in the process of becomming "Kate" - then when he FIRST assumes the role of KATE, I'd double slug the names

JOHN/KATE

Thereafter slugging 'her' name as KATE for the rest of the script.

This is the same for 'revealed' identities - The MASKED MAN at the beginning of the movie is revealed to be SAM PARKS when he removes the mask

MASKED MAN/SAM PARKS


Thereafter - the character is slugged by his 'identitiy' in the scene IE SUPERMAN or CLARK KENT

I have also used the slash "/" between the two names.

I introduced a character early on in a script and I wanted to keep him very mysterious. So no one ever called him by name, although one man addressed him as "Doctor." The man was in a laboratory and he always wore a white lab coat, so I named him "LAB COAT."

It wasn't until the last five or six scenes of the script that his real name was finally revealed. So I changed his character name to "LAB COAT/DR. SMITH" and he was called that in all subsequent action paragraphs from then onward.
