If you don't make a living solely by writing, what is your 'other' job, as in the one you have to squeeze writing time around?

I'm still in highschool, run my own petsitting and grooming business, help occasionally with the family farm, raise sheep and and a volunteer firefighter (paid on call).

I'm a Data Analyst for a Community Services organisation mainly doing reports for Employment Services. It's involves lots of MS Excel and Access, and is extremely boring and not rewarding in the slightest, except for the meagre paycheck bit.

Hence, why I'm on AW so much.

I teach 8th grade Literature.

Good points: Summers off. Incentive to read lots and lots of YA fiction. Being around young people who love to read and talk about books.

Bad points: Very little free time during school year, with much time spent "working" outside of work hours what with grading papers, etc. Emotionally draining job. Being aournd young people who despise the very ground you walk on and would eagerly burn every book in existence, despite your best efforts.

Conclusion: Eh. It keeps me in ink and notebooks, and has rewarding moments.

I am a court reporter, and I take depositions of witnesses in lawsuits and prepare the verbatim transcripts at home. And a homeschooling mom of five kids under nine. Not much time to write...

I work for a structural engineering firm; currently working on two major office towers in Nashville, and finishing up a hospital project in San Antonio, Texas and another in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Mom and full-time student. Don't get paid for doing those things, but they do take precedence. :)

My main job is as an alternative high school teacher-- English and History. Low pay, small classes, and a split shift that has me working five days and two nights (four hour shifts). I get part of the summer off, but teach summer school.

I also dabble in real estate on the side, do some online courseware development for a small company, and my newest job includes being an online course facilitator.

I'm also finishing grad school. And I'm married. I have to cook most of my own food because of allergies.

I write in every free moment. Sometimes while the students are working (or watching movies.) I write whenever I don't have something else I need to be working on... and sometimes when I should be doing something else. It drives me nuts when I go more than a day without being able to put down any words. And it makes me sad when I'm too busy to even think about writing.

I barely have time to read, unfortunately. I don't watch much TV, except a few shows that I can put on while working on something. I don't have much social life, which is fine with me since I have Hubby and I have writing. I need little else. =)

A dark, evil place.
I collect returnable bottles and cans, and sell single cigarettes to small children.

I'm the Behavior Coordinator at the Tennessee Rehabilitation Center. It's a comprehensive vocational rehab facility, where adults with virtually every cognitive, psychological or physical disability you can think of learn job skills. I administer the Behavior Modification Program, teaching our students the behaviors they will need to keep the jobs my co-workers teach them to perform. Most of the time, I love it.

I work in a mall in marketing/business development... It's a living. I love the people I work with. For me that is the most important, someone to be in the trenches with.

I'm the CEO for a Fortune500 company that designs greeting cards, restaurant menus, and condom packaging. I also have three successful home-based businesses: screenprinting, photography, and pickling.

Okay...not really...I'm unemployed, I just write.

I ponder the scope and direction of humanity's folly while generating vast amounts of income (and karma) by focusing on the universal principles of wealth and harmony.

(Srsly, I'm a copywriter - so I write about people who believe they do these things)

And people here have the coolest jobs evah! Y'all are some creative folks. :D

I'm the sole Technical Documentation Specialist for a small web-based software company. Translation: technical writer. I write instructions that help people use software. Boring, you say? CHA!!!

I'm also: mother of two, pet owner (2 dogs and a hamster), home owner, wife, cook, laundress, booker of holidays, scheduler of music lessons, and all-round stressed-out crazy woman. Sometimes I write fiction.

I'm an editor, which means I manage the heck out of all the elements that go into a book until it's ready to go out into the world and do a lot less actual editing than you'd think.
