Hi: I've been refreshing my limited knowledge about Harlequin's different imprints.

What's the opinions on Harlequin Undone? I like the idea of short stories.
Have bought a couple to read but thought I'd also ask the knowledgable people here.

Thanks for the feedback.

Cheers, Josie :)

If you are thinking of submitting I would not even hesitate after all its Harlequin.

So true, of course.

But I need to read the stories on-line. They are ebooks
and though I don't mind that, I'm having trouble downloading them.

:Hammer:

P.S. I don't really hit my computer. I treasure it :)

I shall persevere.

Cheers, Josie

I've thought about submitting something to their Historical Undone line, if I read their guidelined they want it to be a bit steamy...

Thanks for trying to help me.

Adobe Reader doesn't work for me now.

I've done something wrong on my Macbook I'm sure.

Yes my understanding is they want their stories steamy.

I guess I could write something without reading any of the previous stories.

Thanks :)

On the e-harlequin site I think they have links where you can download free readers?

YOu could always delete and re-install the adobe reader. That may work.

I would think historical romance just in compact form with more steamy scenes :) I assume right from the beginning they want their characters to have that immediate attraction.
I'm not sure if I could write it to be honest, most of what I write is novel length. Right now I'm working on something for their intrigue line and even that length I find is pretty compact.

You need to read the stories. They seem to follow a specific pattern and although they say "steamy" in the guidelines, most of the ones I read really weren't. Not nearly as steamy as, say, the Nocturne Bites line.

:editor's hat on:

Yes, you really do need to read what they're currently buying or end up writing the wrong thing, wasting your time and theirs.

"Steamy" varies from writer to writer, as does their level of writing skill.

I tried to find sample excerpts on the ordering page and was unable to turn up anything. Perhaps there's something on the writers' websites, but I have no time to look.

One thing that helped me make a choice on which to read were the authors' bios. It was pretty clear they'd written those themselves and little to no editing was done.

A couple I could barely get through; they were simply unreadable. Unfinished or choppy sentences or one long sentence or a packing list of information about the writer (often quite dull stuff) clued me in that I might get more of the same in their story. Now perhaps the HQ editors cleaned up the story, but the raw product of the bios was a bit scary!

I bet I've let myself open to "I write a terrible bio, but my prose is great" posts. Yup, I know that. I just mention checking the bios as a general guide on whether the writer's style might work for me or not.

Also, check to see if the writer has written OTHER things for HQ and if there are samples up on the site or on Amazon.

Yo--HQ, if you're lurking here, put in at least a first page of those stories! If the writer is any good, readers will totally buy the product because the first page should HOOK them solid.

This year is Harlequin's 60th anniversary and they are constantly offering free ebooks and stories as promotional deals.

The response I had from the editor was they wanted "steamy" but with euphemisms. The first Undone's released were shorts written by established Harlequin category authors, and were based on those authors' upcoming releases. Kinda like promo shorts. The ones I read... I wouldn't call them steamy at all.

Was not overly impressed with the line, myself.

LOL, no need to be impressed with the line--just the SALES it can bring.

Yes, we are all dedicated to our craft, but in some cases it's okay to remember that we're not trying to be Shakespeare!

Sales or not, if I don't like the stories or writing there, I'm not going to want my work in the same place. Stands for publishers in general, for me.

The money would be nice. And it's a beginning...a start...that's what I want.

And of course, I would submit what would be the best I could do...and I also believe it's a matter of taste.

Thanks for all the inputs. Keep em coming.

Cheers, Josie :)

Adobe Reader doesn't work for me now.

I've done something wrong on my Macbook I'm sure.

OSX comes with a program that will read .pdfs, called Preview. It's lighter and quicker than Adobe Reader, and comes without all the extra cruft.

You can open a .pdf in Preview by control-clicking on the file name and chosing "Open With..."

To set all .pdf files to open in Preview automatically, control-click a suitable file, chose "Get Info", set the program under "Open With" and then click "Change All".

Hope this helps.

I tried submitting to this line actually so we'll see how it goes. *still blithely hopeful* I've been waiting for awhile which is a little frightening... lots of time to get tense.

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions!

I finally discovered the ipod touch I obtain a few weeks ago has best and fastest way to download these Historical Undone short stories....buy and download onto the ereader on the i touch...so I am finally reading them.

The first one I read is quite good...and you're right the senusality and sex is mild but lovely. And there is even a conflict or two :)

Maybe it's just me.

On to read the next one

Thanks and cheers, Josie :)
