we here at fantasy writers anonymous sometimes get carried away with our powerful dragons, demons, and yes... even vampires. Sometimes our heroes can overcome these obstacles with "L33T" combat skills however often we must employ magics and the like to give our protagonists any hope... sure we can give them brains as well... but often even that is not enough.
The year is 2009 though and an enemy rising in popularity from an already fairly high popularity are zombies. A rather pitiful monster in comparison these monsters manage to get by, in large part, because the average joe who lacks L33T swordplay, magic, and even super intelligence (omg!) feels like their are ways that even they could triumph with a little luck. An effect shown by the spawning of the infamous "zombie survival plans" for some of those bitten by the rage.
So how can you, if you have powerful antagonists and protagonists, hope to bottle even a little of this thunder? Create even the slightest feeling that, at least in some circumstances, the average Plain Jane could come out on top?
One scenario I have is an enemy who is immune and cancels out "magic". I also have included guns which are very much effective in many situations. But I want MOAR!!!! I want Joe Blow to stand beside The Flaming Prince Smarticus and , with a six shooter in hand, say:
"bring 'em on"
on note: I only want this feeling spiced into some scenario's for flavor. Toning down the powah level isn't an option... but by all means if you have something to say on how to make typical people on equal grounds as Flaming Prince Smarticus the whole time then mention it.
I would post book specifics and put it in sandbox but I think that there might be many people who could be inspired by this so I prefer to keep it general.
