Glimmer Train - Fiction Open 3/31/09

Glimmer Train Fiction Open closes March 31.

Word count range: 2,000 – 20,000. First place wins $2,000 and publication in Issue 75 of Glimmer Train Stories. Second- and third-place winners receive $1,000/$600 (or, if chosen for publication, $700).

Open to all writers, all themes, so have at it!

We don't publish stories for children, and we don't publish works longer than 20,000 words.
We do consider unpublished novel excerpts if they feel like complete stories.
It's fine to submit more than one story or to submit the same story to another category.
When we accept a story for publication, we are purchasing first-publication rights. (After we've published it, you can include it in your own collection.)

March. Results will be posted on May 31.

Reading fee: $20 per story.

Before I send off twenty dollars, I wonder how a piece of historical fiction does in these literary contests? Anyone have an opinion on that? How often does Glimmer Train publish short historical stories?

I recall reading one story in GT that had a historical slant, but it was most certainly literary.

I'm pretty sure there's a place on Glimmer Train where you can see the titles of the pieces that were selected for the last open fiction contest. That might give you a hint. They have a different contest running every two months and from what I understand, the publication has a pretty good reputation. It's run by two sisters. If I were you. I'd browse around their site and/or look/post in the short fiction forum to see if anyone has any experience. I'm sure there are some threads on Glimmer Train on AW. Puma

$20 entry fee.
Probably at least 3000 people entering.
$20 x 3000 = $60,000 - $3,600 (for the prizes) = $56,400 profit!!!
No wonder why the Train is Glimmering. It's full of gold bullion!

ps They're a very reputable pub, though. So probably still pays to enter if you can spare the loot.

Glimmer and Hist?

I've subbed a couple of prize winning hist fict short stories to Glimmer and not had a nibble!

That wasn't in their contests though, but I do read the mag when I can get it and it is mainly contemporary lit fic.

Before I go and freak out on what to send them (not), does anyone know what payment method they are using? I can't do Paypal, doesn't work in my country.
I couldn't find any info on their site.

I think their site said something about taking snail mail if you want to pay that way.
