So I'm writing my first book and I have lots of ideas. So I'm guessing my book may be considered YA since the MC is a middle schooler. Now I'm not going to lie, I did work six months in a porno shop and after I'm done this project I'm thinking about moving on to civilised erotica (sex in the city levels only not edited for television details) Is that going to be a problem? Just thinking really long term here

I guess the main question that I am asking is does reputation haunt you as a writer?

If your MC is a middle schooler, it's probably not YA--it's middle grade. You can always use a pen name.

Mid grade.

If your MC is younger than 14, it's almost definitely MG (or adult with a child protagonist).

If I'm reading your post right, you're concerned that your job in a porno shop and your interest in writing erotica in the future might hurt your chances/books if you also write for kids.

That's what pseudonyms are for

Lots of erotica writers use pseudonyms. You can also be proactive and make sure anything with your real name (if that's what you use on the MG fiction) out there connected to anything questionable is removed. You may decide to use pseudonyms for both and keep your real name out of it altogether.

Having the same name for both genres would likely pose a problem. The 10 year old looking for your MG stuff and finding the erotic stuff might make Mommy a little freaked <grin>
