Hi Rhymegirl,

Absolutely! I don't know why, but it has always been one of my favorite things to watch all year. I think it is the "secret screenwriter" in me. And the Oscar for best original screenplay goes to.....

Hope you have a great party!

Behind you! Boo.
I am! I'm looking for some escapism, so I hope they don't hold back and get all conservative with the outfits.

I've only seen Slumdog and Gran Torino (is that even nominated?), but it sounds like there were some good movies out this year.

Hugh Jackman in a tux, doing song and dance? hell yeah I'm watching. *sigh* now scarletpeaches is going to agree with me again.

The only category I'm torn about wanting someone to actually win is best actor. While I think sean penn is amazing in Milk, i was mesmerized by Frank Langella in Frost/Nixon. So while I'd be happy for any one to win anything, except for the reader as best movie because i agree with many people who call it a revisionist apologetic you-know-what, best actor is the only one where i have a favourite.

So is this where I go for results?

No interest at all in the pageantry, and besides I'm just hella too busy. I don't know why I'm in here, I'm trying to get caught up with work...

Yeah, I'm a big movie fan and an actor, so that's a given. But this year I really want to see Kate Winslet (sigh) win, finally.

My pick (I'm going for who WILL win, not IMHO-should):

Best Motion Picture of the Year
Slumdog Millionaire
(It has won just about every award, including the Globes and BAFTA. It's in the bag)

Achievement in Directing
Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
(the DGA win pretty much seals it, especially with SM's momentum to win the big prize. The only viable contender really is David Fincher)

Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
Sean Penn, Milk
(Rourke may be the sentimental favorite, but Penn won SAG)

Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
Kate Winslet, The Reader
(Streep also won the SAG, but Winslet won Supporting at SAG for the Readers as well, plus every other major awards, so I'll give the edge to Winslet; plus Streep has won before, and Winslet is betting 0-5 so far -- this is her year)

Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight (no brainer)

Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
Marisa Tomei, the Wrestler
(this is always the hardest category to predict. The Doubt girls are great. Penelope Cruz has momentum. But I think Marisa could be an Academy favorite -- to finally give her the Oscar she actually deserves)

Original Screenplay
Dustin Lance Black, Milk
(the WGA win seals it)

Adapted Screenplay
Simon Beaufoy, Slumdog Millionaire
(the WGA win seals it)

Achievement in Art Direction
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (no contest)

Achievement in Costume Design
The Duchess

Achievement in Makeup
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (no contest)

Original Score
Thomas Newman, WALL-E
(while Jai Ho is a great song, the soundtrack of SM really isn't the best)

Original Song
Jai Ho, A.R. Rahman & Gulzar, Slumdog Millionaire

Best Documentary Feature
Man on Wire

Achievement in Cinematography
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Achievement in Film Editing
Slumdog Millionaire
(no recent movie ever won Best Pic without winning best editing)

Achievement in Visual Effects
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Achievement in Sound Mixing
WALL-E

Achievement in Sound Editing
The Dark Knight

Best Foreign Language Film
The Class

Best Animated Feature Film
Wall-E

Best Animated Short Film
Presto

Yep. We're making a special batch of chicken wing dip and some other munchies to get us through the show.

I would think the odds on that one are about 100 to 1. If he doesn't win it will be one of the biggest surprises ever.

I'm kinda rooting for Viola Davis for Doubt.

Her picture is on the cover of our Sunday newspaper with a big article. She grew up in the poorest city in Rhode Island. The article says if she wins tonight she would be the "first actor from Rhode Island to win in the 81-year history of the Academy Awards."

Reese Witherspoon is the only winner from Tennessee that I can recall (in the major categories).

Well, we could have had a winner with Bettie Page if they gave an Oscar for Best Actresses in a Softcore Porn Role.
