i'm sure some of you have had similar ideas - working alchemy into a fantasy novel. any good sources you've found on the basic principles/theory, assuming no starting knowledge? thanks

A constant state of self-doubt.
Before you start a sixth thread, might I suggest entering some of these terms you're asking about into a search engine such as Yahoo? Or looking them up on wikipedia? That's how I started my research, and it also led me to other sources such as books, etc. It's a good idea always to discover as much as you can on your own, and then bring very specific questions to forums, rather than relying on forums to give you the 101.

satyesu - I realize that you're eager to learn as much information as possible, but you are asking a lot of time consuming and detailed questions. Answering these takes the goodwill and personal time of our members. Perhaps you could refrain from starting anymore for now, and let our posters answer what has been asked? Spread it out a little. There's a lot information to be had and absorbed.

That said, Google is your friend. I found some great information on Alchemy at Wikipedia for a project.

ETA: Also, this entire sub-forum is a wealth of information. Please take some time to read the TOC and old threads.

I have a book called 'alchemy and hermetic mysticism' or something like that, somewhere. It has reproductions and translations of a whole bunch of medieval alchemy books. Look it up on amazon.

Do your searching here within this forum then. As ChaosTitan has pointed out, there is a Table of Contents thread stuck near the top of the forum here. You don't have to use Google if you don't want to--there is a search function right here in Absolute Write. And my guess is that the information you'll find here will be the opposite of "high school simplifications."
