I meant to make this thread earlier as a reminder that Whedon's new show, Dollhouse, premiered tonight at 9 EST. I haven't seen any ads, really, so I needed to remind myself and everyone else. I'm currently recording it but hope my fellow Whedonites enjoy it!

The boxing metaphor was a little on the nose, I'm not sure Dushku can hold the audience's interest every week (though she probably will), even in an ensemble, and the tech guy is Xander Harris-lite. But the second half of the pilot does pick up, and any Amy Acker sighting is cause to rejoice. Certainly I'd like to see the original pilot.

I thought it was pretty good. Seems like it might be an interesting mix of genres. I'll watch next week.

Hopefully I'll remember, or Sage'll remind me again.

Here's an advance review from Tim Goodman of the San Francisco Chronicle. He calls it a disappointment, and his reviews are usually spot on. He was a huge Buffy fan, so I have a feeling he may be right.

I don't have time to watch it anyway, unless everyone starts raving about it.

I just watched the recording. I'm not raving, but I think it has promise. I didn't love any of Whedon's stuff straight off the bat (Dr. Horrible aside) and I want to know where they take it.

I agree with the concerns of most critic reviews--if Echo gets her memory wiped every episode, it will be hard to root, essentially, for a new hero of the week. I'm not much of a contained story-per-episode viewer anyway, so I'll hold on for signs of the bigger picture. Whedon is always good at developing a bigger scope, so I'm not worried about that.

I enjoyed it - although I don't think it's the next Firefly.

I believe the concept is that Echo starts to become sentient - so there may be a thread of character to root for. But my main reservation is Dushku - having to act a different character every week, I'm not sure she's up to it.

Watching it - and hoping the Whedonesque pulls it through.

I agree. I was downright laughing at some points because no matter what character she plays is always seems to be, well - herself.

According to Rolling Stone, Joss was really not happy with the direction he felt pressured to take the series in and - at least in the first episode - I think it shows.

By and large, it missed the spark and wit that Whedon's endeavors usually have.

It was a neat show, but it wasn't a trademark Whedon show.

I agree with a lot of you...I'll watch further, but I wasn't blown away by it. Love Firefly a LOT more than this, and we know how long that lasted.

It just felt sort of flat to me. I'm hopeful that once Joss gets rolling, it will be better.

Susan G,

I hope so but he's stated that this will be his last television series and that he's going to start going more internet projects. I suspect it was the nail in the coffin.

I think it's because he has to work with FOX again. >.>

I also have worries that Dushku might not be able to carry a show, but I could be wrong.

I like that the first episode wasn't just "Echo comes in and kicks everyone's ass" kind of thing. It had depth to it, it wasn't about the fighting.

As for the 'personality switches' each episode, while I think it's an interesting concept like others have said, it remains to be seen if she can pull it off.

I suppose the really good thing about it, is that at least Eliza won't get bored and it might make her grow as an actress, having to play all of these different people.

That said, I will keep watching!

Meh. I was not impressed. I don't like Eliza Dushku so that didn't help but objectively I don't think she can handle the acting this show will require. I didn't believe her as a negotiator for one second. It's like Eliza didn't have a clue how extremely powerful women act outside of Hollywood. And what kind of father would trust his daughter to a fake? Give me a break.

The way I see it, this is not that different from Alias in the pretending to be lots of different things part and she has about as much believability as Sidney did.

THe only thing that made it worth watching was Timoh Peniket half naked. yes, I'm shallow. I'll watch another episode but if it's just another major infodump with moralistic speeches (what are we doing? asks the handler) I will skip it from then on.

I'm sorry but right now I'm a bit sour on Whedon because I believe he, indirectly, ruined my fav writer. she worships whedon and she tries so hard to have her books be Whedonesque that she completely throws out character development. It's become more and more clear the more she writes. Sorry, I'm babbling.

For me, nothing spectacular about this show at all, it'll get one more chance and then I'm done. They're just high priced hookers right now, in my book.

But the point of it is that Echo wasn't pretending. They imprinted her with this personality, she actually becomes the person, she doesn't pretend at all.

Also, as someone said, the thread of the story is Echo's burgeoning self awareness. She doesn't necessarily start to remember, so much as realise that she is someone, so far as I've read.

Overall, it's Joss Whedon [And Tim Minear, Steven S. DeKnight, and other such talented Whedonverse writers], so I trust that the whole Active memory wipe won't get stale, and that it will go to very interesting places if Joss is allowed his vision.

I also disagree completely on Topher being Xander-lite. The only comparison really is geekyness. If he's like anyone from Buffy, to me it's Warren. But again, not enough to have any bearing on the show, imo.

My main problem with it is that it didn't feel like a Whedon show in the slightest. No wit. No repartee. No humour.

The show itself was fine, in a generically pleasnt kind of way, but, aside from the concept (which had a very Minnear feel to it, actually), it could have come from anyone associated with Without A Law & CSI Anycity.

But hey, give me thirty seconds of Eliza in that white dress from the first engagement every episode, and I'll tune in... :)

Gah, you're such a man. What we need is more tamoh in boxing rings. or steam baths, or wherever he's required to take his clothes off. ;)

I too found anything whedon completely missing.

I understand that she was imprinted, real, and just like the real thing, but she wasn't the real thing and it messed up. if it were my child i would never go to a company that sells people at a high price to be basically hookers. i'd get a real negotiator. but that's just me. lol

I think what threw me off were the first 10 minutes. That opening scene seemed too written, and not at all how people would actually talk to each other-- too purposefully vague, cryptic just to draw in the viewers... and then she goes and falls off her motorcycle, and the first thing she does is take off her helmet before getting back on? If you can't drive around a corner without crashing, you probably need that.

I'll keep watching, but right now I'm pretty skeptical that it'll turn out very well. :/

LOL i totally had that same thought about the helmet. "oooo she can't ride around a corner but now we get a shot of her freewheeling spirit as her hair flows in the wind, only it's all fake cause she's just imprinted. who directed this crap?" is basically what I thought.

This was my concern before I watched it, but once I realized there actually was a character there who will continue through the series, I had more hope.

I just saw it, don't think much so far. The story of the cop going after the dollhouse was much more interesting, i'm hoping that plays into the series more. And obviously Whedon is starting some plot arc, as we see the file about the 'Alpha' at the end. Here's hoping any storyline about an Alpha doesn't just become a Red Vs Blue Reconstruction knockoff!

Problem is, I'm not sure i'll tune in next week. If I do, I'll only be doing it for the same reason I did this week really - Eliza Dushku is hot. And her in that white dress...shiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Buffy took a full season to really interest me. The first few episodes of Firefly were quite poor, imo. So i'm willing to give dollhouse a chance after only one episode.

And Dushku is insanely hot.

I don't know, this certainly feels like a good arc story changed into mostly standalone episodes, and the arc story is more interesting than, say, the umpteenth 'Most Dangerous Game' homage. Be nice to get more mythos.

Agreed on all points. (Except that if the original Firefly pilot had aired when it was supposed to -- which is to say, first -- it would have improved the early episodes.)
