Can anyone tell me what month fireflies first make an appearance in the northeastern US (western NY)?

It depends a bit on the weather but in N.H. it was / is June. Fairly early June, too, before school got out. By mid July our pasture would be thick with their glowing blinks.

When it's warm. May, June. Soon as it's warm out. I think after there's much threat of frost (beyond the occasional freak cold snap.)

At least that's what it's like in Michigan. Usually before school's out (we're out end of May) when I get home after nigh class, there'll be a few winking fire flies trying to get laid.

Just in case anyone else has an older brother with an odd sense of humor, there are no fireflies with red or blue "lights"

Last year in Pittsburgh it was July before any showed up. Kind of late for them. Do fireflies hibernate?

At least July if not the warm days of early August here in QC. It has to be warm and humid.
