What do you think this line means?

Another writer

ONce you know the truth, it can't be unknown

Once you lose innocence it can't be regained

I used to re-write the lyrics to songs and then after many plays on the radio decide I liked my version much better. I guess that is strange.
Or maybe it means that you can't escape the past. If you were a class clown for instance that youthful decision has you cracking jokes until you die because we are creatures of habit.
Or...maybe we are writing our lives with days instead of pages.
It seems to be suggesting that we are all writers, and each of us cannot escape our version of the truth.
Like the belief that my father had that each person is always thinking of numero uno, or selfishly of themselves only.

I loved this song and actually wrote a new melody to the lyrics...

I think the line means he's just someone who couldn't write himself out of his own truth. He can't pretend. He can't deny anything. But the truth can be too much... note the line in the chorus:

Sometimes when we touch
the honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes
and hide

I read it as he's conflicted by his own inexperience with love, with how he doesn't exactly know how to express and experience it. Romance befuddles him so much his own pride gets in the way, to cover. He's insecure to the point that only some of the tenderness he feels makes it through.

His truth, therefore, is his unexpressed love - just like the hesitant prize fighter, who has so much potential, but is held back by his inexperience, his youth. The writer is also known to hold so much potential, wrapped up in their own truth (or true nature), but is so often trapped by it.... until they learn to recognize and express it.

I think it means this question doesn't belong in the Novels forum.

Actually, I think it means a writer is limited to only a version of the truth. Love is too complex, there are too many versions of the truth, and you can never plumb the depths of love no matter how hard you try.

To me it means he's not mature enough to let his mind explore the possibilities that may exist outside of known reality, but then again, I'm just deep like that. What it probably means is that 'truth' rhymes with 'youth'.

Because he says "my" truth, I take it to mean he's trapped within his own sense of what is true, which is presumably different from any other person's sense of what is true. Trapped within his beliefs about things, his philosophy.

This was the impression I got from it myself. I know I have a similar mindset at times.
