Inside, up the stairs and to the left.
Writers should read everything. They should especially read books in their own genres. I dabble across the genre board, and my WIP is a suspense novel. I'm about 55k in, and I think it's going well. What I want to do, though, is start reading more suspense-type books to get myself thinking. I've read stuff to that effect, of course, and I do read quite a bit, but can anyone tell me what authors are considered 'the big ones' to read in that genre? Runaway wants to culture herself :)

Thanks!

What kind of suspense? Medical thriller? Robin Cook. Crime thriller? Lee Child or Lawrence Block. Legal thriller? John Grisham. Then there are those that are hard to classify, but are definitely suspense, like Clive Cussler (adventure) or Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum. Romantic suspense is a category unto itself, but I can't help you there, as I don't read that.

jeseymour nailed it down, but my favorites are: Patricia Cornwell (Scarpetto, main character), P.D. James, James Patterson, Nevada Barr, Sara Paretsky,Allison Brennan,Harlan Coben...and...of course, John Sandford. Oh, and Edgar Allen Poe. Wait...how could I leave out Steven King? They all have their particular 'touch'.

Two more: Michael Connelly, and Stephen Coonts, and I'll give John Sandford a second vote. Did anyone mention Crais?
