PLEASE IGNORE THIS THREAD. SEE THIS THREAD INSTEAD: http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=132302

Some of the other forums have had story contests from time to time, but I don't ever remember one in the Writing About Animals forum.

I think we need to have a contest with an animal theme. I'd be willing to put up an Amazon $25 gift certificate as a prize, maybe a book or two as well.

Any interest? If so, we can work out the details. My initial thought was a short story of no more than about 1000 words to be posted in SYW and voted on my other AW members.

I would definitely vote and possibly submit.

Count me in! I never write fiction but it would be a fun exercise.
I have a lovely foster dog I can throw into the prize pot. :)

Contest Rules - Comments?

I was thinking of something informal. Some contests in the past have gone to the trouble of making the submittals blind entries and that sort of thing, but I don't think we really need to do that (do we?). I was hoping the contest could be fun and offer a bit of encourage to others to write and complete a short story.

Here were my initial thoughts:

Story requirement: A story with animals as a main element of the story; it could either be a story with an animal(s) as the main character, or about animals, or a story about a person who is somehow changed or affected by an animal(s). The story could be either fiction or nonfiction. The story could be in any genre, just so long as the story has a strong animal theme or presence.

Length of no more than 1500 words.

Three weeks from the start date (TBD) until the close of the contest.

Stories to be posted in Share Your Work. Since there is not a dedicated Writing About Animals sub-forum in SYW, I guess the stories could be posted in Other.

We could either all post in one thread in SYW, or each person could post their story with a thread heading that includes "Animal Story Contest". The entry could also be a link to a story elsewhere, such as a blog or personal website, just so long as the story has not been previously published (in the normal sense of the term).

After all stories have been posted, I could start a thread with a poll here in WAA, and others could vote for whichever story they like best. The voting period would be, say, ten days. Doing the voting by poll would have the advantage of being simple to set up; the disadvantage would be that everyone could see exactly how many votes their story got, or didn't get. A request would be made that no comments about any of the stories be posted until after the contest ends.

Grand prize to be a $25 Amazon gift certificate.

If there are enough entries to justify it, a prize for second and third places could also be awarded.

How does this sound? I'm complete amiable to whatever changes others think would make the contest a success and generate some interest.

I was thinking of entering a story myself, but if anyone thinks that that would somehow be unfair (or that I would get "sympathy votes"), I won't. Since others will be voting on the entries, I don't see a conflict offhand.

And I guess I'd need to get Anne's official blessing for the contest (which probably means I will have to promise not to threaten to eat any delicious parrots for the next few months).

As long as nonfiction's eligible, I'll throw my hat into the ring. I'd consider throwing one of my cats into the ring, but believe me, no one wants that!

AW. A very nice place!
sounds good to me, Alleycat.
Like the broad range of subject and approach.
Definitely enter one, yourself. I'm looking forward to participating,
and reading the animal stories of others...and winning a cat ;-)

I'll give it one more day to let anyone comment who wishes to, then I'll post the "official rules". I think we can say Sunday, 15 February as the official start day of the contest.

And remember, there's a free cat for last place!

I think it might be wise to wait until Anne gets a chance to review this. Odds are she'll approve and I suspect might be able to put the touch on a few folks to add to the prize list.

I'd like to do it anonymously. Since there are prizes involved, it seems worth the effort to hide identities. Plus it's so much more fun with a little mystery :)

I know it makes it more difficult, but I also think it should be blind.
even if I don't enter, but vote, if I'm short of time I may be found guilty of skimming those from users I'm less familiar with or reading entries from those I am familiar with first. sounds mean but I think it's kinda human nature. or if there's a tie between two entries I may lean towards the underdog or whatever. or compare the entry to piece to the person's other works and maybe judge it that way. blah blah, you get it.
I'm really not evil but I'd feel more comfy voting on blind entries.

Well, we could do it blind. It will make it somewhat more difficult since someone will have to collect the stories, then post them, and maybe even fiddle with the formatting a bit.

I'm willing to do it.

BYW, has anyone seen Anne lately? I might have to start posting pictures of cooked parrots . . .

...will entrants also participate in the voting?
Yes, I think that was always done in the past.

If we're going to do it blind, it would probably be better not to do the voting with a poll as I suggested. It would be better if someone collected the votes.

I'll have to go see how they handled this in the past.

It might be better if I just handled the contest, and didn't enter. That won't bother me; I just wanted to have a good times with animals stories and maybe provide a little encouragement.

BTW, I've sent an PM to Anne asking her to come look over the contest idea, and approve or disapprove.

AW. A very nice place!
...me too about wanting to have a good time and enjoying reading about animals. So if you need an assistant of some sort, Alleycat, I'd be more than willing. (I'd post a story, but one that wasn't to be officially voted on included in the comp. Just getting a story written would be more than enough reward :)

Anne's been having a few health-related issues this winter. I've sent her an email. If she hasn't weighed in on the thread by early next week we'll consider options. A few more days will likely only result in more entrants.

do whatever you feel is best-we'll have fun no matter what.
if we do it blind, perhaps a second person to help would solve the issue of whether you should also enter. all votes for you could be sent to the other person?
I know I don't participate here a lot but I love this place, and could help..I come on every morning usually.
