I'm a college student currently and I have a bit of a problem. Most of my problem is that I just need to vent about my instructor. The class is a Business writing class and is part of a business degree. Its an online learning course and I'm completing today's assignment. The assignment is to write two persuasive messages. The problem is that my instructor wants the message to come from personal experience (no role-playing what if I was working for this guy) prefferably work experience. She also wants the message to be fairly long. (i know this from her previous critizims on my papers) all of this would be fine other than the fact that I'm 21 and have never held a proffesional job, and, I have no letter writing experience related to the required topics. To top it off when she edits you paper she doesnt just critique your grammar and whatnot but she challenges word choice. and on top of that she follows none of the teachings in her own writing to the students yet so rigorously grades us on it. (meaning she's supposedly familiar with the rules). I'm really frustrated and not sure where to come from in my messages because I have no personal experiences that i could use for the assignments in this class. argh

Write two letters related to business, your education, or future career since the assignment was only "preferably work experience".

For example, have you ever gone into a store and felt you were overcharged? Write a letter to the manager persuading the store to give you a refund.

Have you ever seen something a business did and thought it would have been better if they had done it a different way? Write a letter urging the company to change the way it does business.

You're certainly been in school. Write a letter to one of your teachers to convince her that your grade was wrong and that you deserve a better grade.

Or how about two letters on the same subject. the first about the waiter or waitress who gave you poor service, and the second about the one who gave you excellent service and made you feel welcome. We've all had those experiences.

I've never had any sort of job, but that doesn't mean I haven't "worked" in some way or another. Have you ever done any chores, or reorganized a room or cleaned the yard or done dishes or helped somebody move or cared for a pet or volunteered...? Anything at all? Look carefully. Even something you thoroughly enjoyed and thought was just a hobby could be a type of "work" if you put the right spin on it.

I think you're stressing too much about the work experience aspect. As you said, you're 21 and it's a college course. Others taking the course likely have little professional experience, as well. I'm sure you've probably worked in some capacity; write about that. It's a persuasive piece; not an in-depth look into a particular industry.

Good luck.
