Hi everyone!

I'm in the process of getting commitments for interview subjects for a NF collection of first-person experiences, and have a question about normal practice and etiquette.

I'll be interviewing them either in person or by phone, transcribing the interviews and editing them into a coherent first-person account. The first-person recollections will comprise the bulk of the text, and I'll also write an introductory paragraph or two, putting their story into context. These are regular folks, not industry experts or celebrities.

Obviously, they'll get a copy or two *when it's published (;)), but I don't know if they would expect a contributor's stipend, similar to the $200 per submission payment offered by the Chicken Soup folks.

What say all y'all? Thanks so much!

IMO, since you are writing the material they shouldn't receive a stipend. The Chicken Soup contributors write their submissions. Perhaps that is why they are paid.

I am doing exactly the same thing for my book. I started off offering copies to the first few folks and then I realized that I can't afford to keep doing that with a good 50 interviews to go. I found that people were willing to do the interviews simply because they believed in the need for the book. I've chatted with some awesome people and I've had no problem getting interviews.

Beware, however, that it is illegal in most states and definitely illegal when you cross state lines (federal law) to record a conversation unless the other party is aware. So make sure you get their permission first and then state that the conversation is being recorded at the beginning of the interview as well. Better safe than sorry.
