Richard Burlew was one of the finalists for Wizard of the Coast's Fantasy Setting Search. Lost out to what would become Ebberron, but the guy knows how to tell a story.

My group is still too afraid to try 4.0

We've spent thousands on 3.0 and 3.5 books, so we'll keep using those for a long while.
