Is there a character in your novel that you identify with? I like my hero, but I am more sidekicky myself, so I am more like my hero's partner.

Who are you?

I'm thinking of writing myself in, in the guise of a failed poet in the grip of madness. Annnnd if you've ever read my terrifyingly awful poems, you'll understand this completely. :D

Not one individual character as such, but a bit of me is in several characters. I just spread it around so no one recognises the real me.

I identify with bits and bobs of all of them, but it usually depends on their mood, if that makes sense? I might identify strongly with a character's sense of impotant rage and injustice one scene, then have to work in a much more 'just acting' frame of mind to render their solution of killing half a dozen people later on.

I have one student who is a spoilt brat and is probably very close to what I was like in primary school.

I'm with Qwerty....I'm kind of spread out across my characters, and so are some of my friends' traits. Problem is that one of my characters does the job a friend did and has a few of her traits (and my friend has read it and is fine with this) BUT a mutual friend of ours noticed this when reading my first few chapters and now SHE wants a whole character to herself! Pfft. No chance.

My female MC is nothing more than a pathetic author-insert in search of wish fulfillment.

I'm at best the librarian my main character interacts with briefly. She's friendly, maternal, notes his black eye, pretends to believe his lie about how it happened, and urges him to be more careful. Later on, when something bad happens to the person who gave him the black eye, the reader is allowed to presume the police will confirm past injury by talking to her.

Maryn, friendly, maternal, and noting all your black eyes

I am far too boring to warrant a whole character in anyone's novel, let alone my own. Bits of me might appear in some of my characters, but none of them is all me.

I'm the non-traditional college student who throws up in the trash barrel.

 (I never thought how funny this would be to write this!)

I suppose that I'm like the main character in some ways, but she's probably braver than I'd ever be.

My favorite character is the seemingly sexpot, but really wickedly smart, sassy redhead who married up to become a baroness. There's a little bit of me in her too. ;)

That's it! We can put some of ourselves into a character, but we can make that character do and be what we aspire to ourselves but haven't the courage to bring about in real life.

Ain't fiction bloody great?

My just-finished draft has a bunch of characters expressing different sides of my personality.

The main character is a whiny or cynical depending on who you ask, sort of like me. He doesn't think too much anymore though, not after that last draft.

The villain is, among other things, a guilt-ridden, cackling mess and the guilt part is definitely something I've dealt with. Not so much cackling however.

The villain's lieutenant is honorable and intelligent and just about everything I would like to be... and he is absolutely merciless, something I don't want to be except when I'm really upset.

That's just in 3 characters out of 20 or so. I'll go out on a limb and say that those are the ones with the most direct analogues to me, though.

In my last two books, I only made cameo appearances a la Stan Lee in every Marvel comic book brought to the silver screen. But in my new WIP, I'm one of the main characters. Yes, this time the goddamn book is about me.

I am the author.

As am I--I'm the author. I've never written with myself or anyone else I know in mind.

I am no one in my cast of characters. I don't base my characters off of friends or use some of my/their personality traits. I don't picture friends or celebrities. I basically avoid self-insert of any degree, at any cost. I don't write in search of catharsis for a bad day, in celebration a good day or anything like that.

(No offense meant to anyone that does, of course.)

All of the women in my most recent novel are nutcases - one is a manuipulative controlling evil little thing with a mean left hook (not me). One is a self-medicating depressive (also not me).
There is one other minor female character - but she's all earthy bohemian ex-hippy artist turned tea shop owner. definitely not me.
And I'm not Glenna the VA hospital nurse who honks like a goose when she talks either.

so far as I can tell, none of my male characters resemble me much either. And neither do either of the ghosts. Nope. I'm nowhere to be found in my last novel. I'm just the person who wrote them.

If any of my characters deliver snarky lines--that's me :} I'm kind of like poison ivy--if one has it they all have it.

Honestly, I unintentionally wrote myself into my main character. Now, I'm trying to make her different, more heroic, because I'm not really hero material myself.
