I recently installed Office/Home Student 2007. I'm having the worst time trying to get the spellcheck to work. If the grammar check is on it deosn't spell check and even when I click the grammar check off I don't think the spellcheck works right.

My old Wordperfect uses the Oxford English dictionary to spellcheck and I think it did a much better job.

Is it just me or does anyone else have a problem with Word 2007 spellcheck?

Anyone have any idea how I could load the Oxford Dictionary from WordPerfect into Word 2007?

Thanks

First, do you know where your wordPerfect dictionary is stored on your C drive?
If not, find it.
Click the Microsoft Office symbol in the upper left corner of Word 2007
At the bottom of that menu, you will see 'Word Options'. Click that.
Click 'Proofing' in the list in the left panel. About midpage in the dialog box, you will see a button labelled 'Custom Dictionaries'. Click the button.
In the next dialog box you'll see an 'Add' button click it. track down your Wordperfect Dictionary and select it. Click OK.
After OK'ing your way out of the dialog boxes, you should have the new dictionary available. Select it as your default dictionary.

Um, what doesn't work right? Is it not flagging words you think are spelled wrong? Or is it doing something else weird?
My only suggestion without more data is to make sure that 'hide spelling errors' isn't turned on by accident.
(Go to Word Options, hidden under the office symbol at the bottom of the menu. The select Proofing and Make sure 'hide spelling errors in this doc' is NOT checked.
)

I've never had any issues with Word2007s spelling and grammar checker. It always knows when I'm wrong. ;-)

After further examination, my suggestion will only place her 'CUSTOM.DIC' from the other program in play. Sorry. Clair's suggestion is all I can think of.

Thanks for your help

RJK-When I click ADD I can't get my Wordperfect or it's Dictionary to show up.

Clair-It doesn't higtlight any of my mispelled words and leaves more than half of them unchecked or corrected. I checked 'hide spelling erorrs' and that's not marked.

I hate being a computer feeb :(

Do you have enough memory on your computer to run Office 2007? Check the specs on the box and check your computer (Right Click My Computer and select Properties.)

You may not have enough computer speed to run it.

Another thing to check is for free space. Word2007 is a much larger program than previous Word processors. Right click your harddrive (probably C) and go to properties to see how much free space you have.

I have 4.69 GB's left.

I'm going to try and copy my Wordperfect dictionary to CD and then see if I can load it to Word that way

Interesting or completely stupid update to my problem.

I went to the Microsoft site and found lots of people were having the same problem I was, seems my Word is locked in French language mode. Yup french. I did what is listed to change to English but nothing, I had to email the problem to microsoft and will let you know the end result.

Thanks for all your help.

ETA: Update. After 4 pages of tech help and days of exchanging e-mails with Microsoft the spellcheck problem seems to be solved. Word disabled the spellcheck saying it might negatively affect the program. We'll see how everything goes

Can you tell me how you ended up fixing it? I've gone through all of that on my own before I found this post and mine still doesn't work.

Thanks!

Do you mean to say you have a hidden way to disable Spell Check even though it isn't disabled in the usual sense? Oh, my! Nuts to Microsoft! My Word doesn't have an "Office Button", so I guess I have a lame version... lucky me.
