The 'Nobody Understands my (Rubbish) Writing' Thread :D

Aka The 'Everyone hates the Awful Stories I Scribble!' Thread. :D

I've posted several excerpts from my horror novella here at AW & on one or two other forums, and have generally received very helpful critique for which I'm truly grateful. But...I write in a deliberately old-fashioned, lyrical manner which is very much influenced by Oscar Wilde; I guess my prose is a little too purple for some. :D To a modern critic, this style breaks virtually every contemporary 'rule', it seems, and I often find that the crits I receive are awash with 'red pen'. This disappoints me, and I wonder if the critics have missed the point somewhat...not everyone wants to write in an achingly modern style.

Does anyone else feel that their writing style is unsuitable for the modern reader, or is perhaps misunderstood in its essence?

Once again, I must stress that this isn't a rant against the very helpful people who are kind enough to review my writing; let's face it, praise is pretty useless to a writer whereas valid criticism is useful. It's more of a cri de couer - I've no wish to follow modern trends, you see.

Pfft. Whatever. People can bitch about my writing all they want. PublishAmerica accepted it, and when I'm a famous published AUTHOR, they'll all be sorry they criticized me.

Ps I trust the above was ironic; if not, feel free to virtually hit me. :D

*insulted look* No. I'm serious. PublishAmerica believes in me and is giving me a chance because NO ONE ELSE understands my writing, NO ONE ELSE will give me a chance.

But just watch...once PA publishes my book, EVERYONE will want it. They'll all buy it, and they'll all be sorry.

Just. Watch.

Not at $19.95 a copy, they won't. :D

Pfft. Mine will be sold for $29.93 per copy. Because its WORTH it.

Yes, they call me mad! Mad!! But one day, every town, city and village
will have my terrible pseudy self-published books in their garbage libraries!!
:rant::D

Amateur. Mine's going in the Smithsonian. They're pawning the Hope Diamond to pay me for the privilege of putting my book on display.

Yeah. It's THAT good.

One day, a day not too far away, in liek, the future, I shall use the MASSIVE advance that Random House gives me to BLOW MY NOSE!!1! Banks will have to print wider cheques just to include all the zeroes in my advance! And I'll use the Nobel Prize for Literature as a doorstop!

Oh please. There isn't enough money in the world to cover my ROYALTY checks for the first seven nanoseconds after my book is released, let alone the advances for my follow up.

I'm publishing them under a pseudonym though, just to avoid all the mobs of fans and such, though the platinum-plated Lamborghini might give me away. Look for my books under the name "Bestseller McBadass".

Steve

I've seen your stuff and SYW and enjoyed it, but haven't had time to offer a crit. I think it's boring if every book off the shelf sounds the same. If you want to write in a less modern style, I salute you. I think readers are more inclined to allow for an elaborate style in older books, because that's the way books were written then. But they expect something different from a newly published book.

Having said that, I think people who like Victorian literature generally or the likes of Dumas, Dickens, and Conan Doyle will enjoy your writing. It's just a question of letting them know you're out there. I'm surprised that an agent hasn't grasped that.

Thanks, GirlWithPoisonPen :)

In retrospect, this thread was a bit ill-advised & I should have worded it more clearly - it just looks like one of those awful 'Poor me, no one understands my UNIQUE GENIUS!!1!' threads which thethinker42 has rightly satirised.

So, I'm definitely not saying that my writing is better than anyone else's (because it isn't), nor am I claiming that my work is unique, revolutionary, or even worthy of praise. Hell, it's not even grammatically correct most of the time. :D :D
