What do you do to help get over the writing blahs?

For me, writing energy is an ebb and flow.

When the energy is high, I write, when it gets low, I do something else, like exercise, watch a favorite show or movie on DVD, focus on work or relationships, or work on another creative project like knitting or cooking while the writing thoughts simmer in my subconscious.

And yeah, read AW to see what ya'll are up to.

Huh. January must be 'writing blah' season. As others have said, I let it go and cook, cross stitch, web surf...or go on the cruise I won (next week, squee)

Reading is a biggie, too. I either pick up a book that makes me groan and say, "I would have done this that way, and why did he do that?" or sigh and say, "I want to be this good."

I do quilt and read alot in my spare time which is not much. I've also thought about using a voice recorder to help my writing along. I think it would help me get more into the characters actually acting the scenes out. Has anyone else tried this?

I agree, I read a paranormal romance last night by a well known author and was like wow, I wish I could weave a story like that!

You keep writing. Take a break if you need one, but don't stay away too long. (I go wander in antique stores, because it lets my brain breathe or I walk or take a long bath because it makes my body relax and my brain starts sparking)

Writing begets writing.
Not writing begets the realization that writing is hard and not writing is easier. I've found things written in blah periods are almost indistinguishable from things written when I thought I was 'on fire', esp after editing.

I write. I don't write as much as I normally would, but I keep plugging away. When I go back and read what I've written I usually don't like it, so I delete and start again.
I don't want to stop writing because I'm afraid to lose the momentum, even though it has slowed to a crawl at the moment. I know I'll get through it.

I just find at times I end up with a total mental block.

I put some great music on, or I read something in a different genre than what I'm working on; the same genre only makes me feel more inadequate and BLAH.

I also talk to myself, usually in the car or while I'm doing something inane at home like housework - and role-play my characters, doing their dialogue or describing what they're doing like a narrator. I let the craziness roll, baby. :tongue

If anyone recorded what I say during these times, I'd surely end up in the wacky bin! Or worse...on youtube.

Keep fighting those blahs! You're probably just tired from the Holidays still. :Hug2:
