Can anyone suggest some YA "realistic fiction" books where there is domestic violence / verbal or physical abuse (as in beating, not sexual) from a parent against a young teenager?

Also YA books where a parent is an alcoholic?

Any suggestions would be great.
:)

You Don't Know Me by David Klass (LOVE it)--boy abused by his stepfather, also hilarious, touching, and absolutely fantastic.

Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson (though I'm not a fan)--father is an alcoholic

There are tons more I'm sure I'll think of later.

The Rules of Survival by Nancy Werlin is about an abusive mother; came out last year & received a lot of buzz
I just finished Sweethearts by Sara Zarr, which alludes to parental abuse & alcoholism
Also try Burned by Ellen Hopkins and Touching Snow by M. Sindy Felin

The Possibility of Fireflies deals with parental neglect and abuse (both physical and verbal)-- in this case, mother/daughter(s). I thought it was a pretty insightful portrayal.

Also YA books where a parent is an alcoholic?

Junk by Melvin Burgess (it's called Smack in the US) has a main character whose parents are alcoholics. The main storyline is about drugs though (as the title suggests ;)).

I can think of a few non fic books. My sister has a BA in psychology and is an English teacher. She swears by some book called 'A Boy Named It' I think that is what it is.

"The Lottery Rose" by Irene Hunt , its older, but I really liked it. I would guess it took place in the 70's or 80's. It was required reading for us back in highschool.
