Hi Everyone,

I wanted to introduce myself and say how much I appreciate you all. I don't really feel like a "newbie" because I have spent a great deal of time reading the valuable information on this board while forging my way through publishing oz. Many people may recognize me from the WritersNet board, and it is niice to see many familiar names.

About me: I just graduated from college (FINALLLLLLLLYYYY) and just when I think I can't stand to sit in a student desk another minute, I am starting my graduate program. I got my bachelor's degree in English with a minor in Marketing. My graduate work will be in English, but I am still narrowing down my emphasis. I thought at first I would focus on early literature from a particular period during the 1800's. But then I thought that may limit my career opportunities. ;) I would like to ultimately teach and look forward to doing some teaching during the program. I also want to write and publish materials that help to bring more traditional literary influences back into contemporary literature. My boyfriend is nodding off as I write this, which reminds me that I need to think the matter over carefully before focusing on only one goal.

I currently live in a suburb of Houston, Texas, and love the ocean, though I could do with less humidity and mosquitos. That pretty much wraps things up for me right now. Any other literature freaks out there?

Thank you for making such a wonderful website. I hope I can contribute in some small way.

Christianne O.

Welcome, Christianne!

I'm a lit freak, too. I finished my MA in lit in '98. What part of the 1800s are you thinking of focusing on? I'm a big George Eliot fan - heck, I'm a big fan of Vic Lit in general. WHo do you like? Where are you going to grad school?

Thanks for the welcomes, everyone!

Maureen, I am not sure the path I will take with my emphasis. I would like to ultimately teach, and I'm a bit turned off by today's more "modern" literature (modern is in quotes because some consider the 1800's to be "modern"), though I am getting better. My preferences for the 1800s are all over the map. From "warped" writers like Poe and Thoreau, to authors such as Charlotte Perkins Gilman (I could have written "The Yellow Wallpaper," only it would have been pink ;)), and some Kate Chopin (loved the imagery in "The Storm), etc...

As far as teaching goes, is there an avenue you've discovered that might be better than others? Any dead ends that are really dead as far as an MA goes?

I don't really want to post too many personal details since my name is Christianne in real life, but since you know I am in Houston, it probably won't be too difficult to figure out where I go to school. :)
