We saw My Bloody Valentine in 3D on Sunday. I have to admit I was very impressed.
Torture porn it was definitely not. The action and gore was a distinct throwback to the 80s slashers. The big difference was, though, that it was not campy. The 80s slashers had a definite campy feel, as if they weren't really taking themselves that seriously. But My Bloody Valentine has the "feel" of a legitimate fim.
The 3D effects were amazing. The screen took on a true three dimensional look, as though you could step into the scene. There were plenty of deliberate moments of objects protruding out over the audience, and they worked very well.
The story itself was actually not bad. Ten years ago in a small Pennsylvania mining town, a miner went crazy and killed a whole bunch of people. The sheriff and a couple of vigilantes tracked down, killed, and buried the miner. Now, the son of the (deceased) mine's owner is back in town and plans to sell the mine. Doing so could bankrupt the town. At the same time, the murders start again.
The movie is very slickly done. You can always see the cheapo horror movies straight-to-DVD at any video store. Rent one and you can see in terms of quality just how much money they spent to make it. My Bloody Valentine doesn't look that way, which is why I appreciated seeing it.
