There was a piece on one of the network news shows the other days about these two friends. This YT video is not that same piece, but it will give you the idea:

The dog even rolls over and lets the elephant rub its tummy. And when the dog had to have surgery, the elephant stood outside the medical area for days. They finally carried the dog out so that the elephant could see her.

The sanctuary is located in Hohenwald, Tennessee, which is about an hour south of Nashville.

I saw that piece and was amazed. The elephant was so gentle with the dog--you could see the affection between the two.

Wish I could contribute some cash to the sanctuary to help with the upkeep. Can you imagine taking care of elephants (and other types of animals) on your property? It's a great thing those folks are doing.

Thanks for the post, cat. ;)

alleycat,

I saw a TV spot on that friendship. Adorable. I also recently saw a video about a cat and orangutan that became friends in a zoo! :)

I volunteer with a rescue run by an amazing woman. She's a federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator. No elephants, but she takes care of a lot of critters - deer, opossums, raccoons, foxes, raptors, squirrels, bunnies, birds. Pretty cool.
She has dogs, who have learned not to eat the wildlife. :) No stories of sweet interspecies relationships though.
