I've been approached to write a proposal for a bio of a celebrity. I'm supposed to write an introduction and a first chapter and provide a table of contents. Only one other book has ever been written about this person, probably lots of articles, though.

My question is, how important is the subject's cooperation. When should I approach the subject? If the subject is into it, does it then become their book, with me as the co-writer? If the subject isn't into it, would that effectively kill the project?

I'll probably have more questions tomorrow, when I start on the proposal.

Look in the nonfiction area. This topic was discussed recently. If I remember correctly, consensus was that it's your book because it's your idea.
