My writing is more Meg Cabot as opposed to... I dunno, J.R.R.Tolkien.

I know that Meg Cabot has great stories, and is obviously published, but do you think that more detailed--more intricate writing is more sought after as opposed to simpler writing?

You'd do well with either Meg Cabot's or JRR Tolkien's sales. There's definitely room for both, as long as your style of writing works for the kind of material you want to write.

It might also matter what genre you're writing. I don't think Meg Cabot could have written Lord of the Rings, and Tolkien's version of the Princess Diaries would lack a little something.

Inside, up the stairs and to the left.
^What they said. LOTR and The Princess Diaries series are completely dissimilar, and their styles work for them. Both are successful in terms of sales. It depends on what you're writing.

What matters in the story. Pretty writing is fine and all, but if the story isn't compelling it's just words on paper. Write what works for you. Your voice, and the story you choose to tell with voice, is what makes or breaks your novel.
