Dingo by De Lint is also excellent. Not inappropriate for younger readers, but I think it's upper YA, though.
Artemis Fowl comes to mind, though if it fits "paranormal", I'm not sure. (Since I don't know if you're making some sort of distinction.) If fantasy set in a fairly modern world is what you're looking for, there's also The Tapestry (on the lines of Harry Potter, less comic but the same general kids learning magic idea).
