Day of the Triffids - UK remake upcoming

One of the SF books/movies that stands out from my childhood, along with the Quatermass series. Ma Beeb riding the coattails of her modern Dr. Who success it seems.

Be nice to think we'd get to see it on this side of the pond without having to subscribe to expensive specialty channels!

There are a gajillion ORIGINAL scripts worthy of your time, efforts, and money. PLEASE stop remakig movies and GIVE US SOMETHING ORIGINAL!

I loved the 1950s Triffids, even tho it veered quite a ways from the book. But then again, I love 99% of 50s and 60s SF and horror.

I think The Day of The Triffids, by John Wyndham, is one of the best books I've ever heard (I've listened to it on tape twice. It's astounding).

Although I try never to disagree with Lily, who is, in my estimation, one of the patron saints of the boards, I don't think the original movie did it justice. It's a much more philosophical book than the original movie made it out to be.

I look forward to a rigorous remake without any updating. I hope that's what they do.

Whereas the BBC's 1981 version was set in the late 20th century, the new Day of the Triffids will take place in 2011

I'm halfway through the second episode right now and finding the miniseries fun. I did note that somebody involved in this remake is a fan of Watership Down. :tongue

I thought the nuns who sent people out to be eaten by triffids as a human sacrifice to keep their convent safe were directly inspired by the Sandleford warren.

(Creepy scenes, by the way.)

The ending

Hi

I saw it was engrossed in it. Loved all the bits except the ending. I vaughly remembered it from years back but not enough to know what happens.

I was really let down by the ending. I was hoping for a big fight but it just fizzled out. Is that how it is in the book?

I thought it was shit. I couldn't get past the first ten minutes. But I was expecting it to be shit because most remakes are. Can no-one come up with anything original anymore?

It was on a few weeks back and played over two consecutive nights. Got slated pretty badly as far as I know.

Very boring, I agree. I kind of had the idea of how much I was NOT gonna like it when Eddie Izzard survived a plane crash by nicking everyone else's inflatables and floating to safety.

How man-eating plants and a world full of blind people could be boring, dunno, but they managed it.

(And surely not that many people would be that blind - for a start, surely there would be people on the other side of the world who would not have seen the meteor shower or whatever it was?)

Ha, just cause i enjoyed it doesn't mean it wasn't shit. There were some real problems with it and the end sucked, but I enjoyed watching it anyway. I thought it was more good than bad. lol

I enjoyed it. I wouldn't say I was mesmerised, and the characterisation failed to thrill me, but I liked some parts of it.

Hmmm. I enjoyed the '81 mini-series. I'll have to wait until its out on DVD.
