I actually placed in the first line contest he held a while back, and his input to my novel was invaluable. He's wonderfully encouraging and very classy, so I would encourage everyone to enter.

I'm sorely, sorely tempted, but my WIP is such a split-personality mess I'm not sure it's worth it. Though he did say there were other prizes besides a crit, so maybe....

SF, why not write a paragraph just for the contest?

Cranky, you should also enter.

Enter, enter, enter.

Do you think you could post the details here. I don't want to go into details, but I can't access his blog from the computer I"m currently using.

I'd appreciate it.

Details for Blind Writer: Nathan says:

The 2nd Sort-of-Annual Stupendously Ultimate First Paragraph Challenge:

So. Last time we had a contest we had some problems because people were concerned with silly things like "rules" and "things Nathan promised" and "this blog isn't worth the paper it isn't printed on, and in fact, if you were printed on paper you wouldn't be worth the paper you were printed on either, Meanie McMeanieagent."

Let's be clear up front: this is a for-fun contest that I conduct in the free time that I normally spend bathing and attending to personal hygiene. Rules may be adjusted without notice, as I see fit, in ways in which you might find capricious, arbitrary, and possibly dangerous to the Baby Jesus. Let's be clear: no angst this time. You have been warned.

Are we having fun yet?

Now then! You remember how this works right?

1. Please post the first paragraph of any work-in-progress in the comments section of THIS POST. The deadline for entry is THURSDAY 4pm Pacific time, at which point entries will be closed. Finalists will be announced on Friday, at which time you will exercise your democratic rights to choose a grand prize super awesome winner.

2. You may enter once, once you may enter, and enter once you may.

3. Spreading word about the contest is strongly encouraged.

4. I will be sole judge this time. Bwa ha ha.

5. A word on word count: I am not imposing a word count on the paragraphs. However, a paragraph that is too long may lose points in the judge's eyes. Use your own discretion.

THE PRIZES: The grand prize super awesome winner of the SUFPCx2 will win their choice of a partial critique, query critique or 15 minute phone conversation in which we can discuss topics ranging from reality TV shows to, you know, publishing. Your choice. Runners up will receive query critiques and/or other agreed-upon prizes.

On with the show!

And, so I did. Let's see how "Theatre of Seduction" (Carnival for those in the know) will hold up.

YAY! :D

Naturally, now that mine is up there, I hate it with a flaming passion. *sigh* Ain't that the way it goes? LOL

Did he already had a first paragraph/500 words contest?

Nathan likes to torture himself....
I vaguely recall the last one, maybe a year+ ago, it was a 500 ENTRY (times two or three!) contest. I didn't bother to enter, but I remember thinking udging was comparable to reading a few novels, or at least reading the first line or few of every page of several novels.

With the popularity of the last contest, this one might be the "How many comments can Blogspot handle?" contest.

Dunno if I'll enter. I have a very few "opening paragraphs" but I dunno if I got one that's not Absolute Shite, and dunno if I'd even recognize it if I saw it.

ETA: Some are comments rather than entries, but there are 253 posts in the first 8 hours (about 9AM to 4:55PM, presumably that's California time). It looks like almost a fulltime job just going through comments and deleting spam posts.

Well, since it's all in good fun, I'll go ahead and share mine from my most recent. Question: Prologue first paragraph or first chapter first paragraph?

Whichever one is stronger, IMHO, Greenwolf. I just went through all of my WIPs to find which I liked the best.

I'm #316. Poor Nathan. How many do you think he'll have by Thursday?
