Hey, guys, I'm writing a YA novel set in a generic fantasy land, and I have a question for you.

Basically, plot wise, it makes sense for one of my characters to become a quasi-famous singer, but something about that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Just...if I came across something like that, where someone randomly became a famous singer halfway through, I'd just feel like some 60 year old man was trying to appeal to the youth with their hip hop and their hula hoops. Does anyone get what I'm saying?

Hi Stunted. Why are you referring to your own creation as a 'generic fantasy land' If it feels generic to you, its creator, what do think that says to your reader?

If it makes sense for your character to become a singer why does that equate to it being a blatant teen grabber ploy? Either you believe in the device and can make it work or you don't. if you don't believe in it, why put it in?

Danthia

If he randomly becomes a famous singer, then there's a good chance it might bother people as it's bothering you. But if there's a reason, and he's been trying to become a famous singer all along, and that allows him to accomplish whatever it is he's trying to accomplish plotwise in the novel, then you'd likely be fine.

I've learned to trust my gut when it talks to me. If yours is telling you something is off with this idea, perhaps listen to it and try to figure out what is troubling you about it. Maybe you can accomplish the same end in a way that feels better to your instincts.

I totally agree with Danthia. Anything that just pops up in the middle of the novel is going to be frustrating. The reader should always see the path that led the character to the surprising event. Just weave it into the beginning too.

Good Luck!
