The new Dark Shadows movie

I am so excited for this! I was such a fan of the series growing up, and apparently, so was Johnny Depp. He is supposed to be playing Barnabus Collins in the new film adaptation!

Anyone else a fan?

It's a conspiracy, Ed. One morning, Hollywood woke up and said, "So! What can we remake this time that will totally piss Shadow Ferret off?"

"How about Dark Shadows?"

"Sounds like a plan."

But, um...the Johnny Depp idea? That was mine.

Dark Shadows was an inimitable show, IMO, for a very long time. I was very little when it was on the air and it impacted me enough that I can still remember some episodes to this day. It was very different from the rest of the fare on our --count them-- THREE television channels.

I can understand where Ed is coming from. Some things should never be remade, even if they can be. Star Wars or Gone With The Wind are two big examples of that in my world. A remake, regardless of the technology there to 'make them better' would just be--wrong. I don't feel that way about Dark Shadows.

Ed does.

I actually read a Dark Shadows book at some point in my adolescence--something about a ballerina that Barnabas fell in love with. I think I was in the hospital and it was on the library cart.

Huge DS fan. I even own Lara Parker's Angelique's Descent. She wrote an essay in the DS Almanac of how she was approached by Harper Collins. She had no idea why the agent wanted her to write a novel or why they seemed so confident in her abilties. Then the agent "assured" her there was nothing to worry about, because a ghost writer would do most of the work. Lara (an English minor) was immediately pissed off at the notion and wrote it herself.

And it's a fun romp.

As for the flick- I'm open minded. My main concern is that they leave the characters as adults. I'll scream bloody murder if its DS-going on 90210.

Dark Shadows is already been remade, and more than once. This time, it's in the hands of someone who genuinely loves the series.

And I don't think Star Wars should be remade, either, but to do so is not "destroying my childhood memories." They're still there.

Oh for pity's sake! I adored Jonathan Frid, David Selby, Lara Parker, Kate Jackson, and the rarely seen but ever-loved 'Mike Shadows'.

I devoured the House of Dark Shadows and the Night of Dark Shadows movies, I collected the DS books, about 25 or so the best was actually a collection of old vampyre stories: Mrs Amsworth, Byron's the Giaour poem. I even had the LP, yes, and a bad case of love for all things DS.

I was pleasantly surprised when DS came out with Ben Cross and Joanna Going. Scream queen Barbara Steele was Dr Hoffman. There was actually blood when Barnabas bit someone. I missed that in the original.

I believe Depp will give his all as he has for POC, Sweeney Todd, Chocolat, & Sleepy Hollow.

The original series is now on DVD. They didn't introduce any supernatural elements until about a year and a half into it. There were first some ghosts, and then the vampire. When they first released the series on DVD, they started with his first appearance. They have since put out the earlier episodes. It is a soap opera, but it's still a pretty interesting one. It got much better once the ghosts started appearing, and after Barnabas came out of his coffin.

I think Johnny Depp would make a great Barnabas, and he has a genuine affection for the character. I kind of hope they don't retell the first Barnabas story, though. He's been so many places and done so many things, and there are many ways they could go with him. But I've seen the bit with Maggie Evans and Josette so many times. Either way, I think it will be good.

At least it's not some film school hack doing it. Tim Burton is one of the last great visionaries of Hollywood, so he'll do it right. Ah, Alice In Wonderland is underway!

I'm inclined to disagree with that one.

Anytime I see Tim Burton's name on a project, it immediately turns me off from wanting to see it. I can't quite place my finger on what it is about his flicks, but I just don't like them.

While I'm not quite there yet, I will agree that he's *not* one of hollywood's last great visionaries. He's a one-note director who took a look and extended it to every movie he's ever made. A true visionary has a style that is adaptive that even though his movies are different from each other and look different and have different subjects, you can always just *tell* that it's by him. Tim Burton, on the other hand, knocks you over the head with the way it looks (grey) and every movie he's ever made looks exactly the same and is extremely uninvolving. Sweeney Todd left me completely cold. I never once felt drawn into that movie, or interested in the characters, nor did I care about any of them. I just kept thinking, ooo it looks like every other Tim Burton movie ever made. I look for growth in visionaries, and I just don't see it in Tim Burton.

If i see the Dark Shadows movie it will be *despite* it being a Tim Burton film, not because of it. Also I've never seen the Dark Shadows tv shows so there's no nostalgia going in for me, so they better make ti really good to hook me. lol

Nothing to do with Johnny Depp is ever, EVER creepy and is only goodness personified and Johnny Depp only ever leads to sunshine and roses. Why do you think I keep going to see Tim Burton movies?
