Hi!

Imagine for a moment, if you will, that you are a new fantasy publisher. Suppose that it was your plan to publish a fantasy trilogy over two and a half years. Now imagine that the books (but especially the first one) basically stand alone, and can be read without regard to each other, but when read together the story is enhanced and fully realized.

Now since you're the publisher, how would your approach the marketing of each book vis-a-vis the cover. Would you note on the front cover that Book I is book one of a trilogy, or would you leave that to the back cover, or not at all? What would you do?

Remembering the economics of the situation( i.e. new, small publisher), and that it will be a year for the second book to come out and then another half a year for the third book to come out. Also, note that in the first book's previous life it was something of a cult hit which garnered much publicity on its own. Imagine also, that this book is being completely revised and will feature an introduction by a famous genre writer and a killer cover by a famous, and extremely talented, genre cover artist.

What would you do? I truly appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

I've got no easy answer for you, Diana. The good news is the three books are written and it's a trilogy, so potential fans don't have to worry if the author will finish them, and/or the neverending series syndrome. Those are good things. And the fact that, regardless of being a trilogy, they stand alone is another plus. Can this be worked into the pre-release buzz, so potential readers know that even though it might say "book 1 of 3" on the cover, there's no scary cliffhanger?

Have you researched how other middle and small publishers have done this? Other recent fantasy trilogies and how they advertised them, and what their results were?

Personally, I wouldn't put "Book 1 of 3" on the cover, but I would put "A Chaldean Chronicles Novel" sort of thing with a note inside the cover that it's best to read it in a certain order but not necessary. I think. Or something like that.

Personally, I'm very put off these days by every fantasy book I pick off the shelves announcing itself the first or second in a series that I (more often than not anymore) simply won't waste my time investing in.

On the other hand, "Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker" wasn't the greatest title choice, either.

If the publishing of the first book is, though, as you say, really a reprint? Maybe all the rules are off. You've got an established fan base, why not let them know there's more coming?

If it's an established fan base, then I'd aim marketing towards its triumphant re-release or something along those lines.

However, I'd aim the cover at those readers who had never heard of the series and will be discovering it for the first time. If you can do a small series title and then the larger novel title, that's great. As for dealing with the fact that it's a triology--honestly, I'd put that information (and maybe thumbnails of the two other covers) on the back or inside cover of the book. So that people know that the publisher is serious about bringing these out in a timely fashion. Perhaps some blurbs/reviews about the series as a whole, instead of just this one book, might also waylay concerns since it is a reprint.

Good luck with the venture.

As a reader, I've always found the above method very comforting and informative. That way, you know that there related stories, but you don't feel like you have to worry about reading too much in order, or worry that you may never get to see the end of the story.

Put the teaser of book two in the back of book one and bill it as another book in the same universe, or with the same characters. Or if I was really the publisher I'd consider publishing them closer together and marketing them together.

Why not check out what they did with LeGuin's three original Earthsea novels? I think that was the same situation.

Oh boy, I'd love to be able to do this, but it's impractical for a few reasons:

1)Economic: These aren't going to be POD books. These books are being professionally edited, with top rate professional cover work. We have to pay these people well. We also have to pay for the introduction (no pros write anything for free). We're looking at preproduction costs of at least $2,000 per book. Off-set print runs for 1,000-2,000 books run between $3,000 and $4000 (per book). Then there's distribution costs and marketing costs. The only place to save money with your way would be on marketing. I'm first and foremost a business woman. This isn't a vanity project, I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't think there was real money to be made here. This business has to support itself. I wouldn't invest that much money (to pub all three books back to back) if I had it.

2)Time constraints: For obvious reasons, there are advantages to using the same editing/cover/preproduction team on all three books. They don't have time to do all three books so close to each other. My timeline is about the best I can expect. These people are pros who take other jobs, they don't just work for me.

3)The Power of the First Book: The first book will be relatively easy to market. People want this book. It's hard to find a used copy for less than $70.00 in the US (in the UK you can't usually find one for less than 200 pounds). Plus I have a very innovation trick up my sleeve for a viral marketing campaign that will work best with the first book.

I will however try to bring out books two and three as closely as I can to each other, and as closely as I can after the first book, but publishing is hard work, and it does take time to do things right. Thank you though, I appreciate the thought, and your input.

You could add preview chapters from the other two books at the end of book 1, also. It will reassure people that the other two books are already in the pipeline.

As a reader, I prefer the trilogy statement on the cover. It's icky having to sort through a pile of books, trying to find out which order they go in.
