Hi, I will soon approach publishers and agents with a new PB. This one has a lot of potential and it has me thinking about contract details. What am I looking for? Is it 7% roylaties for both writing and illustrating? What length of contract is most desirable? Is there automatic renewal? Will an agent help? What are the things I should be looking for?

Thanks.

Danthia

Every contract is different so I recommend finding a contract specialist to review any contracts offered to you before you sign. That's one of the benefits to having an agent vs selling your novel on your own, though from what I understand PB's are often sold directly to publishers. I'm sure the PB folks here can offer a lot more specific help on that though :)

Hi Danthia, thanks for the advice. I am surprised that no one else has offered their two cents. I guess this is just an indicator of how many amateurs there are here. i.e. if there were professionals I imagine they would tell of their experience with contracts... Good luck.

Um . . . or maybe it is simply an indication that we don't have a lot of PB authors here. Contracts are different not only from author to author, but genre to genre. I don't think, for example, my personal experience with contracts could help a PB author as I write something totally different and I would not want to give out misinformation.

Maybe check out www.write4kids.com, they have some excellent articles, and I happen to know there are tons of PB authors over at Verla Kay aka the Blue Boards (another writing forum, but specifically for children's book authors) - http://www.verlakay.com/boards/index.php
