Earth ... sometimes
There's something to be said for the old notebook and pen method while in bed. Then when you transfer the notes to your computer (whatever the type/document format you choose), you can clearly see your blunders and rectify them then and there. That's what I do, but I also lay in bed for hours wide awake :)

I've been typing my first drafts for a few months now, but I've decided I'm going back to paper and pen. Because ever since hubby wired my computer up to the 'net, I have dropped my output dramatically.

To reply to your question, MissJalein, I prefer MS word to anything else. Pretty much everyone has it, and, unless you really want to get complicated with your planning and organisation, it will do everything you want it to.

If you're really stuck, put it in wordpad. Most word programmes will convert it if you later open it in word.

If by "where to go to type" means physically:

1) The library
2) A coffeehouse
3) Your kitchen

all have things to recommend them.

The only important thing is BIC (Butt In Chair). When the Muse comes to inspire you, she expects to find you sitting in front of your typewriter. If you aren't there she won't go looking for you; she'll just move on to the next writer on her list.

Welcome! Your question is a bit vague. Are you looking for access to a computer? Our public library has them but you can sign on for only an hour at a time. If you don't have a computer, get a thick spiral bound notebook and long hand it.

I go down the stairs to my basement where I have a little office with a little window and a big computer.

For software, I use Word.

Welcome Jalien. As they've asked above, I'm not sure if you're asking what writing software to use, where physically to write, or where you can find the tools to write.

If you ware serious about writing, you are going to need to acquire the tools of the trade. It is possible to write your novel using pen and a notebook, then transcribe it on a borrowed computer, but what happens after you submit it and the agent or publisher asks for edits. you'd have a big hassle making those changes on borrowed a computer.

A desktop PC that will do everything you need can be purchased for less than $500, including the printer. Add $200 if you want a notebook PC. Christmas is coming.

If you are a student, you MAY be able to obtain a free academic version of MS Office for your new PC, check with your school. If you are out of school, OpenOffice is free and many writers swear by it.

If you are asking about a physical place to write, pick a place where you can get some work done without interruption. It is WAY too easy to allow yourself to be distracted (like posting to this forum) when you should be writing.

Welcome again and good luck.

If you have a Mac, WriteRoom is good. It presents you with a blank screen so all you can see are your words. Formatting and fonts are things you worry about later. I write in WriteRoom and save my work in .txt format so I can actually edit it on any computer.
