I am reviewing a non-fiction book contract and found a clause that the cost of an index, if needed, would be deducted from my royalties, capped at a certain amount. I did a search online and found similar clauses in sample book contracts. Here's one:
15. If the Work includes an index, the Publisher shall prepare and provide said index and charge the cost against the Author's royalties.
Maybe I'm really a moron, but what is an idex and why would it cost money?
