Survival Horror Anyone...?

For those who aren't gamers, "Survival Horror" is a genre of home console games where the player typically controls one character who is being stalked by various monsters, ghosts, demons, etc.

Unlike other games where the objective is often to shoot and/or blow up as many enemies as possible to win, much survival horror is focused on running for your life and puzzle solving as ammo is often scarce and it takes several shots to down a zombie / demon / creature of the night.

Introduction now out of the way, any other gamers into survival horror? Favorite games?

Never played it.....am a CoH player here. (City of Heroes) Am sure I would die if it takes a brain to play. lol........

i love survival horror.

Big fan of the resident evil games, silent hill series, and fatal frame series.

good stuff.

i'll have to see if i can dredge up any other titles we've played at home (wife and me love those kinds of games...)

if you haven't played the fatal frame games, they're awesome. fatal frame II had a killer story line.

Yeah, survival horror is one of my favourite types of games. Resident Evil is my favourite series; Resident Evil 4 my favourite game. The Silent Hill series are much scarier, though. I played the first one when I was sixteen and it scared me shitless.

If you have a next generation system... PS3 or Xbox 360, I can't recommend Dead Space enough. I can't remember the last time a game made almost not want to play anymore due to freaking me out. After a while it sort of settles down like most games would, but those first couple of hours are full of great "Oh crap!" moments.

And good call on the Fatal Frame games emerald. Those are seriously creepy.

yeah, the fatal frame games freak us out. the animation in them is great. and you have no weapons!

as for dead space, i've been hearing good things about it. it's on my list. that and fallout 3. we're stoked for both. our xbox 360 has been down. have to send it out. we were playing mass effect when it glitched. that's also a good game if you're into scifi.

Played Mass Effect and really liked that as well.

And of course, the Xbox 360 potentially blowing up on you out of nowhere is a horror all its own. Mine went on the fritz some months back. They got it back to me fairly quickly, at least.

I enjoy a good round of Resident Evil every now and then, but I've been moving further and further from gaming in the last couple of years. It's certainly fun, though. We've come a helluva long way from Castlevania.

Personal favorites are the Silent Hill serie and Clocktower (can't remember how you spell it exactly).

I can't wait to play Dead Space. Oh and I don't know if it falls under Survival Horror, but F.E.A.R. is an amazing horror game.

Resident Evil sucked me into the genre. Been a huge fan ever since. I don't know if Dead Rising is considered a survival horror, but damn, is that a fun game too.

Resident Evil 1-3 (hated RE: Survivor), Silent Hill 1 & 2, Clockwork 1 & 2, Fatal Frame, The Thing, D2, Parasite Eve.

Although it can be called a FPS (first person shooter) rather then survival horror, Condemned Criminal Origins 1 and 2 are two of the scariest games I ever played. You can pick them up cheap on the xbox 360. The first one is my pick for the scariest game EVER!

I also loved Resident Evil 2 and 4. And I just bought Left 4 Dead. It's fantastic, four person co-op-it's like being in the Zombie apocalypse, nonstop action and tension.

I also vouch for Silent Hill as it is pretty much my favorite series. Most others have been named all ready.

I would also like to bring into discussion Condemned: Criminal Origins, Rule of Rose, and Siren. I haven't played Condemned 2 yet so I can't say for sure on that one.

What?! You guys dare talk about survival horror and not mention Alone in the Dark!?

SH is one of my favorite gaming genres. REs were great, especially the remakes for nintendo. Just got through with Dead Space -- very good atmosphere, use of suspense, overall creepiness in every department.

Anxiously awaiting the next Resident Evil

I've played Alone in the Dark: New Nightmare as well as the new one. I played through the new one, but honestly it is not a horror game like the originals.

I haven't beaten New Nightmare, simply because I lost interest in it when I got near the end.

And I have played Condemned 2 now. It's good, as long as you don't mind an emphasis on blood and gore over fear and story.

Alone In The Dark. The original was a classic. Loved every second of it and it kept me up late when I was just a tot.

Resident Evil 2 kept me up until around 3AM the night I bought it, while I was with a group of buddies and we got smashed. The alligator part was funny to everybody else, but scared the crap out of us.

Now, I usually stick with RPGs (Persona 3 FES, right now).

I'm too big a wuss. I couldn't finish Silent Hill 3, not because of difficulty, but because it creeped me out. Doom 3 as well. I only played the relatively tame Resident Evil 4. Still got the heebie jeebies when the regenerators came up.
