My father is a huge history buff. He reads historical novels constantly. He loves to talk about history. I think he would enjoy a forum where he could discuss various historical events with others. I want to find a forum with intelligent discussions and a place that is basically troll free. I'm looking for suggestions. He is coming to my house on Sunday. I'm hoping to find a forum for him and show him how to use it while he is here. If he likes it, my brother plans to buy him a computer for Christmas (he's the one with money in the family). I'd also appreciate any great historical information sites.

Wow. That's a bit vague. History is a huge subject.

While a history enthusiast can appreciate all areas, usually a certain era/war/civilaztion is more attractive than others. What's his candy? you've got to give a little more information before I can recommend any sites.

But, this is a great sentiment.

He seems to like both world wars and the civil war. I'll ask to see what else. Sorry for being so vauge.

Don't totally discount the historical (and western) genre and SYW forums here. The participants get into some pretty interesting questions and issues. He might enjoy being able to give some answers or comment on historical stories.

I'm not a big one on discussion forums but I do do a lot of surfing looking for answers to questions I have. Be sure to give him a good look at Google and its capabilities (but be sure if you're looking for a phrase or name that you put it in quotes to limit the hits ("George Washington" instead of George Washington). There are a couple of informative Civil War sites. (I don't know about the forums there, but the information and photos are really good.)

As far as WWI goes, there are a few sites there, also.

However, World War II has so many informative sites. Here is a link to a forum.

If I come up with more, I'll post 'em for you. (I do have some on specific battles, and that would be how to investigate further.)
