I asked this question on a different board. I thought I would bring this question up on here. I am just curious if anyone journals their characters. I was thinking about doing this so I can really get in the head of the characters. Has anyone done this before!

I don't do this myself. My characters exst only within the confines of their story. The very thought of pulling them out of it to inspect them or talk to them or set them to some task outside the barriers of their time and place
feels 'wrong'.
But -- Many folks find this useful.
I'd go ahead and try it, if I were you. It may work with your process just fine.

I don't know what this means. Do you mean "writing a journal from the character's perspective?" If so, no, I don't do it, but I can imagine how people might find this useful.
I don't write a journal from my characters' perspective, but I do "talk" to
them, and often it seems that my characters are really alive, because I concentrate so avidly on them.

I don't journal them but I do sit them down and have them talk about (which means I write down) their biggest fears and struggles.

I am still confused about what the original poster and others meant by "journaling characters"--does it mean "write a journal from their perspective" or "imagine an encounter or interview with them and write a journal about that"?

My preference is instead of writing a journal from their perspective, to write a short story from their point of view which covers an aspect of the character's backstory. This has been an extremely useful technique for me because it forces me to live the details of their background, speech styles, etc.
