How are pages numbered if a ms is submitted as a Word document?

Standard ms format dictates that in the upper right corner of each page should be the author's last name, a short version of the title, and the page number. That, I've always read, is to identify unbound printed pages in case they get separated. But the pages in a Word document can't get separated, and it seems silly to me to duplicate two unnecessary items, my name and the title, on 250-plus pages.

Put this information in a header. (View--> Header & Footer Word2k3 OR Page Layout--> Headers Word2k7). THen YOU type it once while Word copies that across all pages. You can even Insert a Page number in the header (which automatically numbers each page) by using the Insert Page Number button, rather than typing the page number on each page. Word will help you. You just have to tell it what you want. =)

You don't know if your agent is going to have to print the document out at some point. Or an editor. Or somebody else.

Since using the automated function means is little extra work for you to comply with the request. And a lot easier than numbering by hand on hardcopy would be!

Even if they don't print it, it's handy to have the information at the top of each page as one scrolls through an electronic file. I know this may be a blow to the ego, but agents read so many manuscripts, they may not remember from opening it to scrolling to page six, what your name is. It's better to have it glaring at them from the top of every page.

I don't always do the name/title thing with a e-manuscript but I certain include pagenumbers. If in doubt, in the absence of specific guidelines standard formatting is wise for any press IMHO.

Thanks for pointing this out. I will be safe and add the info as if the mss was on printed pages.
