Omar Benson Miller (as Train) and Matteo Sciabordi (the Italian boy) in Miracle at St. Anna.

(While I was mesmerized by Heath Ledger in TDK, the Joke was not his breakout role -- I think Knight's Tale was.)

I disagree here. Robert Downey Jr. is a cocky personal in real life, so all he had to do in order to act like a cocky superhero, was to be himself.

I'd call RDJ's success this summer a comeback. But I can't add anything to the original topic, since I haven't seen a lot of movies with newcomers.

(Although I'd wager Heath's breakout was 10 Things I Hate About You--I remember the summer that came out. He was suddenly everywhere.)

Even though Heath Ledger had other roles in other films...

I will always regard him as "The Joker".

Every so often, an actor will come along and create a larger than life character that becomes a mold and model for all others to emmulate.

Heath's performance was legendary

I predict that because of him, future villians will strive to be less like caricatures and more like real people

I would agree with this, I think. I know that a lot of people consider Lords of Dogtown to be his breakout, but I think that he really cemented himself with 10 Things. Lords was more of an ensemble cast, so he didn't get the chance to stand out like he did with the others.

He won for Capote -- brilliant, but I actually prefer Toby Jones in Infamous. I think PSH's breakout role, for me, was in Boogie Nights.

I'm going to go with Ledger, despite what you said.

Up until this point, he was a "meh" actor to me. His role as the Joker showed me that this man is just downright awesome.

Heath Ledger as the Joker was just unbelievable as a comics fan. It was the best of the many Jokers and then some.

He was always one of those character actors you recognize immediately, but after this role I will remember his name.
