Do you ever change forms?

Just wondered. Most of my work to date has been rhyming, eight lines, highly accessible entertainment for a non-academic audience. I've had fun with limericks too. Recently I was invited to submit a piece to a magazine and having looked at a previous edition the work they feature seems to be... more literary in form. :e2faint:

I'm busy working at something which is a totally different form to what I normally follow. I'm enjoying the challenge even though many words are highlighted on the next reading and changed frequently as they are not quite "right". I will post the finished piece on here when I feel brave enough. :e2writer:

Does anyone else step outside their comfort zone, or have a portfolio of different poetry forms that they adopt?

I don't think I've ever written just one 'form' of poetry. It just comes - sometimes in rhymes, sometimes not; sometimes long, sometimes short; occasionally I can force a poem into a certain form - i.e. in the poetry games and exercises. Usually though it just comes as it comes and I write it down.

Step out of that comfort zone and you'll realize how comfortable it can be in other forms of poetry. If you don't usually participate in the poetry games & exercises, jump in and try some of them - especially the ones that force a form other than your comfortable one. I've learned alot there and have found new abilities in myself. We won't criticize and you'll get worlds of confidence. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks, I'll give it a go. I've frightened everyone off the general writing exercises thread as it's gone very quiet in there!

I'd actually like to try my hand at more verse myself, actually. I enjoy the music of poetry, just can't seem to craft much of it. Been trying to write a decent sonnet just for fun for quite some time now.

Free verse is what I write most of the time, but I've also written a couple of metered poems, which I've come to find out is very challenging. LOL

I saw a Valentine Day poetry competition which said extra marks would be given for sonnets and rhyming couplets. I had to google sonnet to discover the exact format, threw in a few rhyming couplets and came second in THE WORST LOVE POEM EVER competition.

You write poetry the way you see fit. If it happens to rhyme well and good, if not do not worry about it. Free form and other types of poetry like rhyming meter and so on can happen the more we practice writing and studying poetry.
