Number of manuscripts

Hi Guys,

Is it ok to submit more than one manuscript to a publisher at the same time? I'm specifically talking about giggle poetry submissions which aren't that lengthy - there's a poetry section in the 2005 Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market that I'm going through presently to narrow down appropriate publishers. Any help on this would be great!

Generally, most magazines accept multiple poetry submissions in one mailing (usually somewhere between 3-5). CWIM should give you the proper amount for the magazines you're considering. After you've sent off one batch, it's best not to send more to that magazine until you've heard back.

Thanks for that info. Just one more question - what about for a children's book publisher, not magazine. Would it be ok to submit more than one manuscript in that situation (I'm thinking of children's picture books)? Thanks again.

Nope, you really shouldn't. Several reasons, the most important being that publishers frown on it. They get far too many submissions as it is, and many of them have closed their doors to unsolicited manuscripts because of it. As hard as it is to be patient, just send one ms. at a time.

The good thing about it is, you may be lucky enough to receive comments back on your first manuscript that will be helpful in revising a new one before you send it in. You never know...

Best advice, write and polish up several good manuscripts, then send them out to different houses.
