I was talking to a friend who had recently published a short novel with Publish America, and had almost talked me into doing the same thing. I decided I wanted to do a little research, and stumbled upon your forums. After about three hours (covering only a little over a quarter of the information you folks have on the vanity press) I decided that it was in my best interest to give up on PA. I warned my buddy, and he assured me he knew what was up, and decided to publish with them anyway. Oh well.

Anyway, I'm here to learn as much as I can about the publishing world so that when I'm ready to begin the journey into trying to get published I'll have some more street smarts (book smarts?).

Sorry about that rant. Really, I just wanted to say hello.

Thanks all for the words of encouragement.

A quick question. I noticed several people on this site have a 60,000 word goal for their perspective books. Is this an industry standard or is this just a personal thing?

Welcome aboard. Beware, you can spend a lifetime in the forums and never get a word written! But enjoy!

Did you know...Novelist John Creasey got 753 rejection slips before he published the first of his 564 books.

Welcome, Mikey!

Re your question about 60,000 words -- it depends on the genre and what you're trying to do. 60,000 actually may be a little light unless you're writing YA and then it might be a little long. But it all seems very relative (especially if you do a search of the AW forums and you'll find lots of people with varying opinions on the word count issue).

Question. What is YA?
