For several weeks I have been "lurking" around this site. I have read many articles here and I must saw this site can be quite intimidating! I read all the posting from so many would be writers and wonder what I am doing here...there is so much talent here already! For many years I, as many of you have had an unbelievable interest in writing. I am a very late bloomer, and I must say the thought of attempting to write, scares me to death. I have found a rather good site, The Desk Drawer, which provides numerous excercise to do. I have found these have helped. I would like to do some online writing courses, but there are so many to choose from. Can anyone recommend a legitment site to find courses from? I am located in Canada and there are many colleges and Universities here that offer courses but I am looking for something that long term. I am interested in courses that can provide me with insite in regards to structure, paragraphs, writing articles and how to set up articles. I am looking for the basics to get started and then continuing to learn from there. My main interest is magazine/travel/trades and newsletter writing. Any help anyone can provide me is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much

I'm afraid I don't know any online courses, but there are a lot of books out there that you can find at any bookstore that explain the things you are looking for. Writers' Digest publishes many of them. I'm sure someone will be along soon who can answer you question more accurately.

Natalie Goldberg is one of my inspirational writing mentors. I never met her. I have read a number of her books: Writing Down the Bones, Wild Mind, Thunder and Lightning, and Long Quiet Highway several times each.

I haven't looked for courses myself, but the golden rule of the internet is:
YOU DON'T PAY FOR ANYTHING ON THE INTERNET!
That is, you don't pay for anything that is just information. You can probably find everything you need completely free, with enough careful searching. That's how I found this place. So don't get fooled by any websites that require you to pay for a course.
Why not look at all the guides they have here, that's what I'm doing.
Also, "insite" = "insight". Get Firefox, it has an inbuilt spell-checker.

Welcome to AW! There are courses offered here if you are interested. There are also writers here who have done "how-to" (for lack of a better term) books that could assist. Uncle Jim's thread has exercises to assist if you wish to start there before getting into a course or buying a book yet. Good luck whatever you do and hope you get published!

Welcome to AW. There are so many writing books out there, many of them good, but "Uncle Jim" suggests the best routes to learning are reading and writing. In fact, one of his first exercises is to retype the first chapters of favorite books, paying attention to the lengths of sentences and paragraphs, the sounds of words, the order of scenes, the dialogue, dialogue tags and point of view. I second the suggestion to check out his thread in the Novel Writing forum.
