Came across this gem of a research tool last night while catching up on internet news:

Google Inc. is trying to expand the newspaper section of its online library to include billions of articles published during the past 244 years, hoping the added attraction will lure even more traffic to its leading Internet search engine.

The project announced Monday extends Google's crusade to make digital copies of content created before the Internet's advent, so the information can become more accessible and, ultimately, Google can make more money from ads shown on its Web site.

I've already given it a brief test, searching for articles on the U.S. Army's Louisiana maneuvers of 1941 (which brought Eisenhower to national prominence), and lo and behold found several pertaining articles. The presentation is similar to microfiche, with the added awesomeness of text search capabilities through what looks like some form of OCR software.

Figured there are plenty here that would be interested...

Interesting stuff. If I ever get around to editing my 1960s piece, this could be a lot of use for little details. Thanks for the heads-up. :D

Looks pretty cool. However, it makes me wonder how far back the media has been flavoring it's reports...

I adore any efforts to get public-domain and antiquated material/information out there for the world to see! I recall when I first found sites where I could actually view entire books published in the 1800s, on all sorts of topics I was interested in. I was astounded and so overjoyed! :D

This looks like a step in a good direction! Now if only Google would allow me to download their PDF books without always giving me errors... :/

Nice site, Doogs. However, I'm going to throw out a caution for anyone searching for a name (surname or surname with given name). There are a lot of Ancestry.com hits coming up and those very quickly get into paying for the material (which isn't always accurate). So, caution advised. Puma

I've been finding a ton of original newspaper articles from the 1800's (all free). I'm doing my happy dance. Although, I did jump ahead to check out what Puma said, and for me, after about page 5 it becomes a bunch of pay per view items. So, I'll just enjoy my freebies and forget about the rest.

Haven't seen any Ancestry.com sites popping up, but then I've only played with this as a curiosity...my subject matter's a wee bit older...
