I knew zero about the band New York Dolls. I knew even less about the effect it had on a whole generation of very good bands. However, this isn't about music. This is about the documentary "New York Doll," which follows Arthur "Killer" Kane for a time.

Also in the film: Morrissey, Bob Geldolf, and a myriad other stars.

I HIGHLY recommend watching this. I offered the preface above as a way of saying, "Even if you don't like music, this documentary will interest you."

I will say two things going in without spoiling it:

1.) David Johanssen, aka Buster Poindexter, is the lead singer for the dolls. He's frightening to view now.

2.) Bring a box of tissues. The ending is a hammer.

If you've seen it, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Otherwise, find it and enjoy.

I watched it on one of my cable channels a few months ago. It's an incredibly absorbing and heartbreaking film, and I can't imagine anyone not being moved by it.

The story of the New York Dolls is one heck of a human drama: the death of their original drummer Billy Murcia in the early 1970s, the deaths of guitarist Johnny Thunders and drummer Jerry Nolan in the 1990s...and so on.
